What to Know About Lash Shedding

You just got your set of lash extensions. You’re so excited with them until you see that some have fallen out already. You may start to worry and wonder if you are allergic to the adhesive used or if the extensions are to blame altogether. The truth of the matter is that shedding is just a natural process that we don’t have control over. To put your mind at ease, here are a few things that you should know about this natural process.

Just like all of the hair on our bodies, lashes have a natural life cycle of 2 or 3 months. As a lash grows towards the end of its life cycle, a new lash will begin to take its place and your lashes will naturally shed. Thankfully, not all of our lashes shed at once. They are all in different stages of their life cycle. On average, a person can lose anywhere from 1-5 eyelashes per day. In a week that is about 35 lashes, which is approximately 20% of a new set of extensions.

There is also what is known as seasonal shedding. During certain times of the year your lashes may shed more than normal. It is unknown why this happens, but seasonal shedding seems to occur most often during the fall months of September and October.

Most likely, you hardly ever noticed when your lashes shed before you started to get lash extensions. And that makes sense because our natural lashes are much shorter and less dramatic than ones with extensions. Because extensions are longer and darker, it can make it more apparent when one goes missing. The good news is that a natural lash will have replaced the old one almost immediately. So when you notice your lashes looking less than full, you can make a fill appointment with one of our lash artists to dress the new lashes that came in. We suggest getting fills every two weeks to keep them looking their best.

It is also important not to disrupt the natural cycle by mistreating your lashes. If you are tempted to pull on your lashes, think twice before you do so. If you pull out lashes instead of letting them naturally shed on their own, it may take longer for its replacement to grow in. If you pull them out consistently, this may disrupt the growth cycle and they may cease to grow back at all. Always treat your lashes with care!

The most important thing to know about shedding is that it is a natural process. So don’t panic if you notice it happening. Once you understand the process you can schedule your fill in and replacement appointments accordingly. We look forward to seeing you!
